What email procotols do you support?
We offer IMAP, POP3 and SMTP access, all over SSL connections.
Why do you only support email over SSL?
We believe that security is critical when it comes to email - just think of the amount of personal information transmitted using it.
Enforcing the use of SSL means that not only are your login details kept secure, but your privacy is safeguarded too.
SSL support is available in all modern email clients, even on mobile phones and PDAs.
What is the difference between the protocols?
IMAP & POP3 are both used to receive email. SMTP is used to send email.
Generally speaking, we would advise the use of IMAP over POP3, but you are welcome to use either.
Below is a comparison of the two:
| IMAP | POP3 |
|---|---|
| Designed for storing email on the server. | Designed for storing email on your computer. |
| Your inbox can be split into subfolders to help organisation at the server level. | Your inbox can't be split on the server, but you can locally. However, it will only apply to that computer. |
| Easy to use from multiple devices in different locations. | Technically possible to use from multiple devices, but requires leaving email on the server and/or closing all other clients. |
| Email can be downloaded in parts, making it ideal for low-bandwidth or mobile devices. | Email is downloaded in full. |
| Email is only available offline if you configure your client to synchronise with the server. | Email is available offline by design. |
| Allows server-side searches, saving local processing power. | Only local searches are possible. |
Do you offer a webmail service?
Yes, our webmail client is available here.
How do I manage my email accounts?
Our client area features the ability to manage your mailboxes and forwarders.
How much storage space does each account get?
The default quota for an email account is 250MB. We have found this to be more than enough for most people.
What happens if I reach my quota?
As you near your quota, you will receive automated alerts to inform you of your usage. Should you reach the limit, the system will automatically clear your "Deleted Items" folder in an attempt to free up space. If this doesn't have any effect, it will clear your "Junk" or "Spam" folder. If you are still at your limit, you will be unable to receive email until you either free up some space, or purchase more.
What protection do you have in place against spam?
We currently check all incoming email connections against third-party blacklists in addition to our own restrictions. We also employ the use of greylisting.
What is greylisting?
Greylisting essentially works by refusing to accept email the first time delivery is attempted. Servers will automatically retry the delivery after a short wait, at which time the message will be accepted and delivered to your inbox. This is effective against spammers as the majority of them do not attempt to retry delivery of failed messages. Due to the way in which greylisting works, you will find a small delay on incoming email. People who frequently email you will eventually become exempt from this filter as they reach a whitelisting threshold. Internal emails (those between users on the same domain) are unaffected.
What email client do you recommend?
Mozilla Thunderbird is completely free to download and use, even for commercial use. It supports many features not available in other clients, through the use of add-ons.
We have a guide available for configuring Thunderbird for use with our hosting.
What is the hostname of your email server?
Our IMAP, POP3 & SMTP servers all have the same hostname - mail.keystroke-hosting.co.uk.
You must use this exact hostname, else you will get certificate errors when you connect.
What are the port numbers for your services?
The port for IMAP over SSL is 993.
The port for POP3 over SSL is 995.
The port for SMTP over SSL is 465.
Many clients will automatically enter these for you when you select SSL security.
What is my username when logging into the email server?
Your username is your full email address, eg. user@example.com.
Do I have to do anything special to send email?
You must enable SMTP authentication. Use the same login details as incoming mail.
